What to wear in Hoi An, season by season

Finished garments hanging in Bao An Tailor's Le Loi shop, Hoi An

Hoi An is warm for most of the year, wet in autumn and mild in winter. You'll spend your days walking the Ancient Town, cycling to the beach and stepping into temples and assembly halls, so the best clothes here are light, loose and modest enough to cover your shoulders when you need to. This guide covers what to wear in each season and for the things you're most likely to do.

The short answer

  • Light, breathable clothes in loose shapes: dresses, wide-leg trousers, jumpsuits, short-sleeved shirts.
  • One layer that covers your shoulders and knees for temples: a shirt dress, a light shawl or a long-sleeved top.
  • Comfortable flat shoes you can walk in all day, and sandals that cope with rain.
  • A rain jacket or poncho from late September to December.
  • Something a little smarter for the evening, when the lanterns come on and the restaurants by the river fill up.

February to April: the dry season

These are the most comfortable months, with sunny days and less rain. Pack summer clothes and a light layer for the evening and air-conditioned rooms. It's a good time for midi dresses and light trousers that you'll still want to wear when you get home.

Styles to look at: Steel Blue Wrap Midi Dress, Floral Print Midi Dress, Sage Wide-Leg Jumpsuit.

May to August: the hot months

Heat peaks from May to August, with midday highs regularly above 33°C in June and July. Dress for shade and airflow: sleeveless or short-sleeved tops, halter necklines, shorter hems and loose legs. Plan your sightseeing for early morning and late afternoon, and save dressier outfits for the evening.

If you need to look smart in this heat, a waistcoat with a shirt is cooler than a full suit. See the Slate Grey Tailored Waistcoat.

Styles to look at: Emerald Draped Halter Dress, Dusty Rose Wrap Mini Dress, Blush Pink Halter Jumpsuit.

September to January: rain, then cooler days

The wet season starts in late September and peaks in October and November, when heavy rain can last several days and the Ancient Town can flood. Choose quick-drying clothes, cropped trousers or shorter hems that stay off wet streets, and sandals rather than canvas shoes. Pack a proper rain jacket or buy a poncho locally.

December and January are the coolest months, with temperatures roughly between 18°C and 25°C. You'll want long sleeves, a light jacket or a knit for the evenings.

Styles to look at: Forest Green Tie-Waist Jumpsuit, Grey Textured Everyday Blazer, Sand Tailored Casual Blazer.

What to wear for temples and assembly halls

Hoi An's pagodas, temples and Chinese assembly halls are places of worship. Cover your shoulders and knees when you visit. The easiest way is to wear something that already does, like a shirt dress or a long-sleeved midi, or carry a light scarf to put on at the door.

Styles that cover up without feeling heavy: Olive Belted Shirt Dress, Steel Blue Wrap Midi Dress, Emerald Long-Sleeve Midi Dress.

What to wear for cycling and the beach

Bicycles are one of the easiest ways to get around Hoi An and out to the beaches. Avoid long, narrow skirts that catch in the wheels; wide-leg or cropped trousers and jumpsuits work better. For the beach, bring swimwear and a cover-up: a halter maxi dress goes from the sand to a beachside dinner.

Styles to look at: Sage Wide-Leg Jumpsuit, Bright Orange Halter Maxi Dress.

What to wear in the evening

Evenings are when Hoi An dresses up a little. The Ancient Town's lanterns light up after dark and the riverside restaurants and bars get busy. A wrap dress, a jumpsuit with a ruffle or a relaxed blazer over a T-shirt will fit in anywhere.

Styles to look at: Burgundy Ruffled Wrap Dress, Mauve Ruffle Wide-Leg Jumpsuit, Olive Casual Blazer.

Having clothes made for your trip

Many visitors have a few pieces made while they're in Hoi An. If you plan to, arrive with a rough idea of what you want, and give yourself time for at least one fitting before you leave.
