Hoi An tailor clothes don’t fit at home? What to do next

It happens more often than anyone admits. The suit looked right in the shop mirror in Hoi An; three weeks later, in a cold office, the sleeves are short and the chest pulls. The dress hung beautifully in the fitting; at the wedding it rides up when you sit. This guide explains why the fit changes, what can be done at home, what to ask the Hoi An shop for, and how to stop it happening next time.
Why it changes
Four causes cover nearly every case.
The fitting was done in the wrong clothes. You tried the jacket on over a T-shirt in 32 degrees; you now wear it over a shirt and a jumper. You tried the dress in flat sandals; you now wear heels. The garment did not change. The body inside it did. This is the most common cause and the easiest to prevent.
You stood still. A garment fitted standing straight in front of a mirror can pull the moment you sit, reach or walk. Tailors know this, which is why a good one asks you to move. If nobody did, the first time you reached for something was your real fitting.
An adjustment was agreed and not made, or was made and over-corrected. The second fitting exists to check this. If you collected after one fitting, nothing checked it.
The fabric moved. A freshly pressed garment looks sharper than it will after a flight in a suitcase. Linen relaxes, wool recovers, polyester blends hold. Pressing at home often brings back most of what you saw in the shop.
What to do first
Hang the garment for a day. Steam or press it. Try it on in the clothes and shoes you will actually wear with it, in front of a full-length mirror, and move. Then decide whether the problem is a sleeve length, a hem or a waist, which are easy, or a shoulder, a chest or a neckline, which are not.
Take photographs: front, back and side, in daylight, with the problem visible. You will need them for the shop in Hoi An and for the tailor who adjusts it at home.
What a tailor at home can fix
Any competent tailor at home can take in or let out a waist by a few centimetres, shorten a hem or a sleeve, adjust a trouser seat and move a button, as long as there is seam allowance inside the garment. This is why the inside of a garment matters when you choose a shop: a jacket with generous seam allowances can be let out at home; one trimmed to nothing cannot.
What is hard or impossible anywhere: re-cutting a shoulder, enlarging a chest, changing a neckline, lengthening anything that was cut short. These have to be right at the fitting in Hoi An, which is why the fitting checklist in the Hoi An tailor guide starts with the shoulders.
Costs for simple adjustments at home are usually a fraction of what the garment cost in Hoi An. For a hem or a sleeve, it is nearly always quicker to have it done locally than to send it back.
What to ask the Hoi An shop for
Message the shop with the photographs and a plain description of the problem. Most reputable shops respond and will do one of three things: advise what a local tailor should change, offer to adjust or remake when you next visit, or, if the fault was clearly theirs and was agreed in advance, contribute to the cost of adjusting it. Few shops will pay for adjustments abroad unless that policy was agreed before you ordered, so ask about it then and have it on the receipt.
Keep the receipt with the fabric details and your measurements. If you want a second garment made on a later trip or by shipping, those numbers plus your photographs are what the shop needs to get it right.
Shipping: before you order, not after
If you are leaving before the garment is ready, the moment to agree shipping is before you pay the deposit. Ask for the courier, the cost, whether it is insured and tracked, and roughly how long it takes to your country. Ask the shop to photograph the finished garment on a form from the front and back before packing, and to send you the photos. A garment that is shipped has not had a final fitting, so the first fitting has to be thorough, and anything you were unsure of should be left slightly loose rather than slightly tight; loose can be taken in at home.
Preventing it next time
Fit in the clothes you will wear. Bring the shoes, and for a jacket or coat, the shirt or jumper that goes under it. If you forgot them, say so and ask the tailor to allow for it.
Move at the fitting. Sit, raise your arms, cross them, walk, climb a step if there is one. Say what pulls.
Insist on the second fitting for anything structured. A suit, a lined jacket, a fitted dress. At Bao An both fittings happen on the same day; elsewhere, if your dates do not allow it, the fitting planner shows what does fit in the time you have.
Leave structured pieces a touch roomy. Fashion in the shop mirror often runs slim; life at home runs with a lunch inside. A centimetre of room at the waist of a jacket is cheap insurance.
Get the policy in writing. Fitting adjustments included, remake if it cannot be fitted, and what happens if you have already left. Reasonable shops have an answer; the receipt is where it belongs.

FAQ
Will a Hoi An tailor fix clothes after I have gone home?
Most will advise by message with photos and many will remake or adjust on a future visit; few will pay for adjustments in your country. Bao An adjusts or remakes at no charge on your next visit and can ship a replacement if you cannot return. Ask any shop's policy before you order and have it on the receipt.
Can a tailor at home alter clothes made in Hoi An?
Yes, as long as there is seam allowance. Taking in, letting out a little, shortening and sleeve adjustments are routine. Shoulders and chest on a jacket are expensive to change anywhere; get those right at the fitting.
Does shipping from Hoi An work?
Yes. Shops ship by courier worldwide; cost and time vary by destination. Agree the price, the insurance and the tracking before you order, and have the shop photograph the garment on a form before packing.
Why did my suit fit in the shop but not at home?
Usually one of four things: you tried it on without the shoes or layers you now wear, you stood still at the fitting, a change you asked for was not made, or the fabric relaxed after pressing. The fitting is where all four are caught.
