HOW IT WORKS
How a Hoi An tailor works
Hoi An grew up as a trading port, and cloth and tailoring have been part of the town for centuries. Today several hundred shops offer made-to-measure clothing, most within a short walk of the Ancient Town. The process is similar everywhere, and knowing it in advance makes the visit smoother.
Choose a style
Shops work from references: garments on display, catalogue photos or something you bring. Decide the garment and the silhouette before you talk about fabric. On this site, note a style number to show the shop.
Pick a fabric in the shop
Fabric is chosen in person from the bolts on the shelves. It sets the price, the drape and how the garment copes with heat.
Get measured
The shop takes your measurements. Wear or bring the shoes and underlayers you will use with the finished garment.
Agree price, dates and deposit
Confirm the price per garment, the first fitting and the collection date, and have them written on the receipt. A deposit is normal.
Try it on, twice
Try the garment on, move in it, and point out anything that pulls or gapes. Adjustments are made and you try it again; at Bao An both fittings happen on the same day.
Collect, or arrange delivery
Try the final garment on before paying the balance. If you leave before it is ready, ask about delivery or shipping before you order.
Browse dresses, jumpsuits, suits and waistcoats and jackets and coats on this site and note a style number to show the shop. The measurement guide explains what is taken and why, although the shop measures you.
TIMING
How many days should you allow?
Many Hoi An shops finish a garment in a day but fit it once. Bao An measures you, fits the garment twice and finishes it within the day: a morning order is usually collected the same day, an afternoon order the next morning. The table shows the shop's lead time; share your travel dates when you order, and allow a second day if you want a margin.
| When you order | What happens | When it is ready |
|---|---|---|
| Ordered in the morning | Measured, both fittings in the afternoon | Collected the same evening |
| Ordered after lunch | Measured, fittings late afternoon | Collected the next morning, or delivered to your hotel |
A day trip from Da Nang works for most garments at Bao An if you order in the morning and stay for the afternoon fittings; a suit ordered after lunch is collected the next morning or delivered to your hotel. At shops that fit once a day, allow two to four days. To check your own dates, use the fitting planner: enter when you arrive and leave, tick the garments, and it shows the measuring, fitting and collection days.
WHAT IT COSTS
What a Hoi An tailor costs
Hoi An has three broad tiers. Stalls at the cloth market are the cheapest and work fastest, with simple construction. Mid-range shops with their own premises charge more and spend more time on fit and finishing. A few high-end houses charge several times the mid-range price for premium fabric and construction. Within any shop, the price depends on five things: garment complexity, fabric, construction, speed, and extras such as a waistcoat or a second pair of trousers.
| Garment | Catalogue price at Bao An (USD) | Styles |
|---|---|---|
| Dress (day, midi, occasion or gown) | $40–$99 | 20 |
| Men's two-piece suit (jacket + trousers) | $149–$199 | 4 |
| Overcoat | $99 | 3 |
An independent local guide places Bao An Tailor in the mid-range tier and describes its workmanship as exceptional (source). The full list by garment and fabric, with Hoi An's three price tiers side by side, is on the Hoi An tailor prices page. Whatever the tier, agree the price before measuring starts, and ask whether it includes the fitting adjustments.
CHOOSING A SHOP
How to choose a Hoi An tailor you can trust
With hundreds of shops, recommendations from hotels and guides often come with a commission attached. Judge a shop on what you can see and check yourself.
- Look at finished garments, inside and out. Check the seam allowances, the lining, the buttonholes and whether patterns match at the seams. A shop that is proud of its work will show you.
- Ask where the garment is made. On site, or in a workroom the shop owns, is better than subcontracted to an unknown third party, because adjustments are quicker and the person who sewed it can see the fitting.
- Read recent reviews with photos. Reviews from the last few months show current quality, which can change when a shop changes hands. Photos of finished garments matter more than star ratings.
- Check the fabric range. A shop with a limited selection may send you to a fabric market, which adds time and a second price to negotiate. The fabric library shows what to look for on the bolt.
- Watch how they handle the first conversation. A good shop asks where you will wear the garment and when you leave before it quotes. Pressure to order immediately is a bad sign.
- Start small if you are unsure. Order one piece, see the fitting, and only then add more.

BEFORE YOU PAY
Questions to ask before you pay a deposit
- What is the total price for this garment in this fabric, including the fitting adjustments?
- When is the first fitting, and when can I collect?
- Where will it be sewn, and who does the adjustments?
- What happens if it does not fit at the fitting, or if I am not happy with it?
- Can you deliver to my hotel, or ship it home, and what does that cost?
- Can I have the fabric composition written on the receipt?
Take a photo of the receipt. It should show the garment, fabric, price, deposit paid and dates.
FABRIC
Choosing fabric
Fabric decides how the garment feels in Hoi An's heat and how it travels home. Linen and lightweight cotton are the most comfortable for daytime. Wool blends make sharper suits and jackets and crease less in a suitcase. Silk and satin suit occasion dresses and show every stitch, so they reward a careful shop. If you are unsure, ask to see a finished garment in the same cloth before you decide.

Every fabric a Hoi An tailor will offer, how to check it on the bolt, and the fabric Bao An keeps on the shelves are in the fabric library. Our clothes shopping guide covers how to compare fabrics in the shop.
YOUR OWN REFERENCE
Made from a photo or a garment you own
Hoi An tailors routinely work from a photo, a screenshot or a garment you bring in. The result is a similar garment in your size and your chosen fabric, not a replica of a branded piece. Show the shop two or three images, say which details matter and which can change, and bring the garment itself if the fit is what you love about it. See made from your own reference for how Bao An handles this, and what works from a photo for the detail.
THE FITTING
Your fitting: what to check
The fitting is where a good garment is made. Put on the shoes you will wear with it, then move: sit, raise your arms, walk a few steps. Check the shoulders and collar on a jacket, the waist and hem on trousers, the bust and zip on a dress. Say what feels wrong rather than guessing what the fix is. Adjustments are normal and expected; a garment that fits perfectly at the first fitting is the exception.
BACK HOME
After you leave Hoi An
Keep the receipt with the fabric details in case the garment needs adjusting at home. Pack suits and jackets folded once along the shoulders, or in a garment bag. If a problem appears after you get home, contact the shop with photos. Bao An adjusts or remakes the garment on your next visit at no charge, and can ship a replacement if you cannot return; the shop also ships internationally if you leave before a piece is ready, with the cost agreed before you order. Other shops vary, so ask before you order; what to do when the clothes do not fit at home covers the options.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Hoi An tailor: common questions
How many days do I need for a tailor in Hoi An?
At Bao An Tailor, one: you are measured, fitted twice and the garment is finished within the day, with afternoon orders ready the next morning. Allow a second day if you want a margin. At shops that fit once a day, plan two to four days. Check your own dates with the fitting planner.
How much does a Hoi An tailor cost?
Prices depend on the garment, the fabric and the construction. As a reference, Bao An Tailor lists catalogue prices from $40 to $199 per garment and confirms the final quote for your design, fabric and fit. Market stalls charge less and high-end houses charge more; see the price list.
Can a Hoi An tailor copy a garment from a photo?
Yes. Most shops work from a photo, a screenshot or a garment you bring in. Expect a similar garment in your size and chosen fabric rather than an exact replica, and be clear about the details you want kept or changed.
Do I need to book a Hoi An tailor in advance?
Walking in is normal. Contacting the shop before your trip helps when your time is short or you want a complex piece, because the team can plan your fittings around your travel dates.
How many fittings should I expect?
Two is the standard for a suit, a coat or a fitted dress: one after the garment is assembled and one after adjustments. Bao An does both on the same day. Do not collect a garment you have not tried on.
Are the clothes made in the shop?
It varies. Some shops cut and sew on site, others send work to a workroom nearby. Ask where your garment will be made and who will do the fitting adjustments.
What is the difference between made to measure and a pattern cut from scratch?
Made to measure adapts an existing pattern or style to your measurements, which is what nearly every Hoi An shop, including Bao An Tailor, does; it keeps prices and lead times low. Drafting a pattern from nothing is the preserve of a few high-end houses and costs several times more.
What should I bring to a Hoi An tailor?
Reference photos, a favourite garment that fits well, the shoes you will wear with the outfit, and your travel dates. If you are visiting Bao An Tailor, you can also note the style number from this site.
